How to install a WordPress theme (safely)
Install a theme from the WordPress repository or a .zip you bought, set it live without breaking the site, and switch back if something goes wrong.
- Admin access to a self-hosted WordPress site
- A current backup (use UpdraftPlus or your host's backup)
Step by step
- 01
Back up first
Always. Use UpdraftPlus → Backup Now → tick database + files. Themes shouldn't break a site, but child-theme conflicts happen.
- 02
Open Appearance → Themes
WP admin → Appearance → Themes → Add New.
- 03
Install from the repo OR upload a zip
For free themes, search the repo and click Install. For paid themes, click Upload Theme → choose the .zip → Install Now.
- 04
Preview before activating
Hover the new theme → Live Preview. Click through your key pages — homepage, blog, contact. If anything is broken, don't activate.
- 05
Activate
Once preview looks right, click Activate. Open the live site in an incognito window to confirm.
- 06
Configure required plugins
Most premium themes prompt you to install required plugins (Elementor, ACF, etc.). Install them from the prompt — they're part of the design.
