How to add a product to Shopify (with photos, variants and SEO)
Add your first Shopify product the right way — photos that convert, variants set up cleanly, inventory tracked, and SEO fields filled so Google can find it.
- A Shopify store on any paid plan or trial
- Product photos (ideally 2000×2000 px, white background)
Step by step
- 01
Open Products → Add product
From your Shopify admin go to Products → Add product. Give it a clear, descriptive title — the title becomes the H1 and a big part of the page URL.
- 02
Write the description
Open with the main benefit, then 3–5 bullets of features, then a short paragraph. Use the formatting toolbar — don't paste from Word, it brings invisible styles.
- 03
Upload media
Drag in at least 4 photos — front, back, in-context, and a scale shot. Add a short video if you have one; Shopify auto-generates a thumbnail.
- 04
Set pricing and inventory
Add the price, optional compare-at price (shows the strikethrough), cost per item (for margin reports), and SKU. Tick 'Track quantity' so Shopify shows it as sold out automatically.
- 05
Add variants
If you sell sizes/colors, open the Variants block, add the option names and values, and Shopify generates a row per combination. Edit price/inventory per row inline.
- 06
Fill the SEO block
Scroll to 'Search engine listing'. Rewrite the title to ~60 chars and meta description to ~155 chars. Edit the URL handle to be short and keyword-led.
- 07
Publish
Top right → Status: Active. Pick the sales channels (Online Store, POS, Instagram). Save.

+How many products should I launch with?
At least 6–8 so the store doesn't look empty. But quality over quantity — one well-photographed product converts better than ten lazy listings.
We build sites on Squarespace, Wix, WordPress, Shopify, Webflow and Framer — from blank canvas to live domain.
