How to submit a sitemap to Google Search Console
Submit your sitemap.xml so Google discovers every page on your site — and check it actually got indexed.
- A verified site in Google Search Console
- A sitemap at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml (most platforms generate this automatically)
Step by step
- 01
Find your sitemap URL
Try yoursite.com/sitemap.xml first. If 404, try /sitemap_index.xml (WordPress + Yoast) or check your platform's SEO settings.
- 02
Open Search Console
search.google.com/search-console → pick your property → Sitemaps in the left nav.
- 03
Submit
In 'Add a new sitemap' type 'sitemap.xml' (just the filename — Google prepends your domain) → Submit. Status should change to Success within a few minutes.
- 04
Check the Pages report
Indexing → Pages. 'Indexed' is what you want. 'Discovered but not indexed' means Google saw the URL but chose not to index — usually a thin content issue.
- 05
Resubmit when you add bulk content
After publishing a batch of new pages, hit the refresh icon next to your sitemap to trigger a re-crawl.
